Norb Murray’s History as a Marine Helicopter Pilot

Norb Murray entered the Marine Corps through the Aviation Cadet program in 1964 and earned both his commission and wings as a naval aviator during the early escalation of the Vietnam War. Assigned to helicopter operations in I Corps near the Demilitarized Zone, he flew combat support missions including troop insertions, resupply, and high-risk nighttime medevac operations under fire. His experiences ranged from landing in hostile zones illuminated only by flares to evacuating critically wounded Marines in life-or-death conditions. After Vietnam, he continued flying in a variety of operational and leadership roles before being selected for the elite Marine Helicopter Squadron One (HMX-1), the unit responsible for presidential helicopter transport—known by the call sign “Marine One” when carrying the President. During five years with the squadron, he flew missions supporting Presidents Nixon, Ford, and Carter, operating in complex airspace, adverse weather, and high-visibility environments where precision and discipline were paramount.
